Frank Seravalli appears to be very concerned with the latest salary cap changes announced by Gary Bettman, and his fears are with all Canadian NHL teams.

The NHL salary cap is expected to rise by $25.5 million over the next three seasons, the league and the NHL Players' Association said in releasing numbers Friday.

Over the course of next season, the cap will increase by $7.5 million to $95.5 million, with the minimum team payroll being at $70.6 million.

For 2026-27, that number projects another $8.5 million jump to $104 million and then a $9.6 million leap to $113.5 million for the 2027-28 campaign. The roster minimums will be $76.9 million in 2026-27 and $83.9 million in 2027-28.

These are large jumps compared to the past. Due to COVID-19, the cap didn't move off $81.5 million from 2019-20 through 2021-22.

Then it went up just $1 million each of the past two seasons before going up $4.5 million this season to its current total of $88 million.

The league and PA then added that the projections for 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons can be incrementally bumped up, also provided a collective bargaining agreement is in place, with the current one set to expire in September of 2026.

Frank Seravalli is worried for Canadian teams

NHL insider Frank Seravalli expressed some major concerns with the announcement of the new cap numbers by Gary Bettman and Bill Daly. Seravalli reminded everyone that Canadian teams have to pay their players in USD.

The Canadian team that could possibly leave: the Winnipeg Jets

Attendance has been down in Winnipeg recently and there have been rumblings that the team could be at risk of relocating once again. This salary cap news is definitely not going to calm those fears at all.

Winnipeg already has one of the highest ticket prices in the NHL, and a higher salary cap means they will likely have to raise prices even more, pushing more fans out of budget, which could lead to even lower attendance.

A low Canadian dollar could also affect all the other Canadian teams too

The Canadian dollar is at an all-time low, and if it remains this way, and with the salary cap increase, teams may not be able to afford to pay their players, which can lead to a massive spike in ticket prices.

Another problem is that Canadian clubs may not be able to spend up to the cap because it will be too high, leading many of these teams to not be competitive, with more American teams being at the top of the league.

It remains to be seen how this all plays out, but one thing's for sure, the future is very hazy, especially in Canada, with this salary cap announcement.
