The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost Dakota Mermis to the Western Conference on waivers, while the Oilers have placed one of their defensemen on the waiver wire.

The big surprise indeed today on the waiver wire was for the Toronto Maple Leafs losing defenceman Dakota Mermis on waivers to the Utah Hockey Club, and that was truly a bummer with Dakota Mermis being such a great depth option.

Having been touted with a lot of high praise as a sound defender, now his loss means the Leafs are searching for depth options on the back end.

The Edmonton Oilers have also been active with waivers, having waived defenceman Travis Dermott, of course once a member of the Leafs himself.

Unable to lock down much of a role with Edmonton, he initially represented a way for the Oilers to add depth to their organization, but now should he clear waivers, he will be able to provide that option to their AHL club.

The Winnipeg Jets also placed forward Henri Nikkanen on waivers for contract termination. The one-time promising prospect did not develop as expected, so the parties decided to go their separate ways by mutual agreement.

That'll mean a new beginning for the player, and it'll clean up some much-needed space for the Jets.

All of these moves show some of the continuous adjustments that the teams have been making in their rosters this season.
