The term 'NHL waivers' describes the process of moving a player from an NHL roster into that of a minor league affiliate that is usually in the AHL. Putting a player on waivers allows other NHL teams to claim him within a certain time window, usually 24 hours. If multiple teams are claiming, the lowest-standing team gets priority. If no team puts in a claim for him, then he clears waivers and can be assigned to the minors. Waivers promote competitive balance by affording other teams potential opportunities to acquire players that might otherwise be buried in the minors. Some players, due to their age, experience, or contract status, are exempt from the waiver process. The waiver process also applies when unconditional waivers are initiated in order to end a player's contract and become free to sign elsewhere, usually in Europe or the minor leagues. It is one of the prime ways that the roster is managed and how player movement occurs within the NHL.
