Hockey Canada has been at the center of a lot of controversy lately surrounding the World Juniors, and now they've done it again with their Four Nations roster. Speculation has reigned for weeks about who will or won't make Team Canada's roster for the Four Nations Faceoff in February. Although no official lineup has been announced, selections reportedly have already been made. TSN's Chris Johnston has confirmed that the roster is official, and the big guns, Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and Connor McDavid, will indeed lead the charge.

However, with those players mentioned above in the fray, rising stars like Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, and even John Tavares had to make way for players such as Travis Konecny and Sam Bennett. Forwards Sidney Crosby Brad Marchand Nathan MacKinnon Connor McDavid Brayden Point Mitch Marner Sam Reinhart Mark Stone Brandon Hagel Sam Bennett Anthony Cirelli Travis Konecny They are not quite among the elite forwards in Canada today, but the potential of both Bedard and Celebrini is unquestioned, with many feeling that they will be key players by the time the 2026 Olympics arrive. It would have been a great opportunity to integrate them into the team's dynamic. Surprisingly, these omissions were not the only question-mark decisions. That in and of itself was an odd call for the defensive line considering Colton Parayko and Travis Sanheim. Having players such as Mackenzie Weegar, Evan Bouchard, Drew Doughty, and Owen Power at your disposal, the choices seem weird. Defense Cale Makar Alex Pietrangelo Shea Theodore Devon Toews Travis Sanheim Josh Morrissey Colton Parayko Players like Power, still expected to be a cornerstone of Canada's Olympic blue line, were out, while players like Parayko and Sanheim, to this date not particularly having dominated at the NHL level, are in. But even more contentious are the goaltending decisions. Few probably saw Samuel Montembeault over other options such as Logan Thompson, Stuart Skinner, or even a farewell appearance for Marc-Andre Fleury. Goaltenders Jordan Binnington Adin Hill Samuel Montembeault And with no real proven goaltenders on this stage, netminding could quickly become a big weakness for Canada.

Outside of those two questionable picks, the roster would have had elite talent to compete against the best in the world. In contrast, these surprise picks do little to instill confidence in the decision-making process that Canada is taking into the 2026 Olympics.
