Auston Matthews missed over a month due to a mystery injury and even traveled to Germany to seek treatment but now strange details are coming out about his trip.

Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews recently returned to the Maple Leafs lineup after dealing with an unknown injury.

During his rehab, it was revealed by the Maple Leafs that Auston Matthews had traveled to Germany to see Dr. Hans-Wilhelm.

The trip was considered just a routine part of Auston Matthews' recovery and something that he had done in the past with Dr. Hans-Wilhelm.

Despite knowing of his travels to Germany for treatment the exact nature of what Auston Matthews was seeking has been a mystery.

This evening a new report from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun has revealed a potential reason why Auston Matthews decided to head to Germany.

Auston Matthews German doctor linked to practices banned in North America

After doing some digging into Dr. Hans-Wilhelm information has finally been found about what makes his practice special compared to other doctors.

According to Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm is known for his use of the drug Actovegin in the treatment of his patients.

This drug is banned in North America and even has a connection to the city of Toronto.

Actovegin is the same drug that famed Toronto healer Dr. Tony Galea was arrested for crossing the border with years ago.

According to a source Actovegin is used to stimulate cellular metabolism which in turn accelerates healing.

Actovegin's benefits stem from its ability to exert insulin-like activity and stimulate cellular metabolism (Buchmayer et al. 2011). Consequently, Actovegin has been shown to enhance glucose and oxygen uptake in the cell.

While it is not confirmed that Auston Matthews took part in this style of treatment it seems like a reasonable thought that he would travel to Germany for such a thing.

Regardless of the reasons why Auston Matthews went to Germany the treatment and medical care he did receive clearly worked and now Auston Matthews is back to contributing for the Maple Leafs.

If more reports emerge regarding the reasons why Auston Matthews sought treatment in Germany we will pass that news along to you.
