Justin Schultz, a Stanley Cup champion twice in his career, and former Edmonton Oiler, has abruptly announced his retirement from the NHL at the age of 34.

After playing in the NHL for 12 seasons between 2012 and 2024, Justin Schultz officially announced his retirement from professional hockey.

The right-shot defenseman spent his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, and Seattle Kraken.

A 43rd overall draft pick by the Anaheim Ducks in 2008, Justin Schultz recorded 71 goals and 324 points in regular-season action and added another 42 points, including 10 goals, in 81 playoff games.

He is best remembered for helping the Penguins secure back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017.

The defenceman also spent time in the AHL with the Oklahoma City Barons in 2012 and more recently signed with HC Lugano in Switzerland last October. However, after just eight games with Lugano, the Kelowna native decided to return to Canada.

"My decision is entirely personal. After discussions with my family, I've decided to retire and return to Canada. I thank Hockey Club Lugano for their professionalism and respect for my decision, and I wish the club and the team the best in regaining success."

Lugano's management expressed some disappointment in a statement but refrained from elaborating further out of respect for Schultz.

"Disheartened by this unexpected development, Hockey Club Lugano has no choice but to respect the personal decision and terminate the professional relationship. The club is currently exploring market options to find a replacement."

"Out of respect for the player's choice, neither the club nor Justin Schultz will make further comments on the matter."

Now 34, it's possible that Schultz could return to the NHL, but it would likely come with a reduced salary. Given his estimated career earnings of $41,325,000, he might just walk away from professional hockey altogether.

Whatever the path that he will take, we wish Justin Schultz the best in this new chapter, whether it is to continue on in the hockey world or to move into life beyond the rink.
