Sidney Crosby won't play tonight for the Penguins due to injury, and his status is now in doubt for the 4 Nations, leaving a Mark Scheifele on Team Canada's radar.

The injury to Sidney Crosby's arm could open the door for Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele to join Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Crosby will not play tonight for the Penguins

The Penguins captain was held out of action on Tuesday and was not in Pittsburgh's lineup for Friday's game against the Rangers. With his status up in the air, Team Canada is examining its options, with Scheifele being the top candidate.

«Because there's some banged-up situations his name has popped up again, yeah,» Jets head coach Scott Arniel said Friday morning.

Arniel's response to those calls: «I think he should be on the team.»

Entering play Friday, Scheifele is tied for third in NHL goal-scoring with 31, with 61 points, three more than Crosby.

Since rosters for Team Canada were finalized, he has scored 18 goals and 16 assists in 29 games for the Western Conference-leading Jets.

«Since we got the call that he wasn't going to be on the team he's played fantastic,» Arniel said. «He's had a great year, actually. I take that back. It's all year. But even since that day he's even taken it up another notch.»

While not much attention is often paid to his defensive play, he's posted a plus-4 rating over that span as the Jets have amassed a 20-6-3 record.

The game on Friday will be the last before the break for the Jets, who had planned vacations for the most part for players, while several NHL games remain through the weekend, with last-minute adjustments possible in roster makeups at the tournament.

«If it works out for him, that'd be great,» the coach said. «That'd be great experience for him. All those guys going to play in that, it's like playing playoff hockey in February. And you love those guys to get into that, be around those type of players. We'll see where it ends up.

«The league goes until Sunday, so we're not sure where everything will play out.»

Sweden and Finland are the other two countries in the tournament and will join Winnipeg entries of Josh Morrissey for Canada, with Kyle Connor and Connor Hellebuyck for the U.S. in the tournament lineups.

For now, Scheifele may need to keep his schedule open.
