The Pittsburgh Penguins have had an amazing run of success over the past 20 years, but if their trade deadline plans tell us anything, its that their run may be over.

Pittsburgh almost moved a second forward at the deadline?

At the recent trade deadline, the Penguins opted to trade star Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes, signaling that even with the star trio of Crosby, Letang and Malkin, they may be ready to push towards a rebuild.

Now, it has been revealed by Elliotte Friedman on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast that they tried to move veteran Reilly Smith as well, with the only holdup being that the Los Angeles Kings were unable to fit him under their salary cap.

«There was a lot of competition for Toffoli,» Friedman said. «There were a lot of rumours about LA LA was also interested in Reilly Smith; they just didn't have any room to do anything.»

It was well known that the Penguins could move Smith at the deadline, and while the interest was there, teams were simply not ready to move big assets, and with little cap room, this makes sense from the Kings perspective.

Kyle Dubas and the organization made it clear that they want to improve the roster over the summer, so this is a deal they could certainly re-visit, whether it be with Los Angeles or any other team needing forward depth, with everything being set up for them to be one of the most active teams in the NHL this upcoming summer.
