The NHL has been rumoured to be moving the Arizona Coyotes for quite some time now, but on Wednesday, it went from speculation to a reality.

It's been a long time coming, and after months of persistence from Ryan Smith, the owner of the Utah Jazz in the NBA, it appears as though he may be getting an NHL team. According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, things are progressing to move the Coyotes from Arizona to Salt Lake City, and while it's not a done deal, it is certainly trending in that direction.

BREAKING: Sources tell @DailyFaceoff- NHL, Arizona Coyotes & Smith Entertain. Grp have made significant progress on the framework of an agreement to relocate #Yotes to Salt Lake City, Utah.

#NHL memo updated Governors today.

NOT done. Many layers and lawyers. Much work to do.

Seravalli follows this up by revealing that players have been informed of a verbal agreement to move the team, but as of this point, it's still not a done deal.

Sources say #Yotes players have been informed that something of a "verbal" agreement is in place to relocate to Salt Lake City, but we've received pushback on that characterization of talks.

Nonetheless, this is well down the track. Let's see what happens next.

After years of struggling to find an arena and a significant footprint in Arizona, this is certainly the right move for the NHL, and with more teams looking to be added in the near future, the league will look very different in the coming years.
