The Sabres have built a talented young core that's ready to take the next step in 2024/25, but according to a top insider, they almost made a huge trade this summer. The Buffalo Sabres have made some huge moves in recent years, but none were bigger than the deal to send Jack Eichel to the Vegas Golden Knights, with the team receiving Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs and draft compensation in return. Now this past week, the team have locked up the young Krebs on a two-year deal, ending his holdout this summer after he rejected his qualifying offer back in June, with the deal carrying an AAV of $1.45 million.

With the season just weeks away, all seems well in Buffalo for Krebs, who will likely be the teams fourth-line centre when the 2024/25 campaign begins. However, that's not the case after all, as top insider Elliotte Friedman has now noted that he heard rumblings Krebs was going to be traded before the two sides ultimately came together on a deal. A couple of days ago I heard Krebs might be traded...Ultimately the deal got done. I did hear some rumours about that but I also heard that Krebs was not in a frame of mind where he wanted anyone to think he didn't want to be in Buffalo

It's unclear exactly which teams were chasing the 23-year old that tallied 17 points in 80 games a year ago, but with the Sabres looking to make a push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, don't be surprised to hear his name come up in trade talks again.
