The Edmonton Oilers have a forward group full of veterans, but now, a 23-year old prospect may be forcing his way into the lineup. After coming just one game away from the Stanley Cup, the Edmonton Oilers have re-tooled in a big way this summer, adding both Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidsson to a lineup full of incredible, high level talent. While that's their top-six, the bottom-six leaves a little to be desired, but with Evander Kane missing for a significant stretch of the season, there's spots to be taken. While most look to Mike Hoffman on a PTO and recently acquired Matthew Savoie, it's another prospect turning heads at training camp, with Vasily Podkolzin, former Vancouver Canucks first-round pick showing why he can be a star in the NHL one day. Oh yeah as hockey people say, Podkolzin has all the tools. But he's still working on the tool box, somehow lacking in confidence despite an excellent frame (six-foot-one, 190 pounds), first-round skills, and an easy smile that makes you quietly hope he finds success. That praise comes from Sportsnet's Mark Spector, who has seen plenty of talent come through Edmonton in his time, and with the size, skill and experience behind him, he could be a breakout star on this team. When a recent lineup projection was revealed on social media, Jack Michaels even had Podkolzin on his fourth line, showing that there's plenty of optimism around him this off-season.

There's still plenty of time for other names to step up, but as of right now, he may be impressing the right people, and if the 23-year old continues on this trajectory, he may be the infusion of youth that the Edmonton Oilers need in 2024/25.
