The Calgary Flames made the fantastic pick of Matvei Gridin in the 2024 NHL Draft, and now he's going to play closer to home in the QMJHL in 2024/25.

Matvei Gridin may have been a surprise pick for many in the first-round of the 2024 NHL Draft, but now, it appears he's drawing plenty of attention after being picked No. 1 overall in the latest CHL Import Draft. It was an intriguing move considering Gridin was committed to the University of Michigan, but now, it has been officially confirmed he is now ineligible due to insufficient grades.

The report emerged shortly after he was drafted No. 1 overall by Val-d'Or in the QMJHL, but now, they will be looking to trade him ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
I can confirm @ConnorEaregood's report re: Gridin no longer going to Michigan. Grades weren't where they needed to be. Val-d'Or looking to trade him once camp opens, again I'm told to Rimouski (unless it falls apart between then and now).

While many Flames fans were hopefully he would play in college this year due to the decline of the QMJHL, it certainly brings him close to home, and if he can thrive this year in the CHL system, he could be fast tracked through the organization. It's unclear if the academic issues are seen as an issue for the Flames organization, but at this point they've got high hopes for Gridin and will look to see him develop in 2024/25 in the QMJHL.
