The Calgary Flames signed Martin Frk, who scored in last night's preseason game. He was suspended a while back for kicking an opponent in the neck with his skate.

Martin Frk was suspended five games in the Swiss National League for kicking an opponent in the head last season. In addition to the suspension, Frk was fined 7,600 Swiss francs, which works out to $8,769 USD or $11,746 CAD. The incident occurred during a match involving Lausanne and Frk's team, SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers.

Lausanne moved the puck into the attack zone, with the Lakers' Frk trying to deliver a body check, failing on the hit and driving into the boards. As he flipped onto the bench, his feet caught Lawrence Pilut in the face. At the time of the incident, the no-call was a fairly surprising call by the officials.

The Swiss National League, after a further in-depth post-game review, decided to continue beyond the on-ice call. Frk had sat out one game while the investigation was in process and after the in-depth review, the league added five more games to his suspension. According to the league's official report, it was classified as kicking, thus recommending the extra games.

The Czech-born Frk spent six seasons in the NHL with the Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, and Los Angeles Kings before being signed by the Calgary Flames this offseason. A 49th overall draft choice of the Red Wings in 2012, he scored 20 goals and 21 assists in 124 NHL games. Frk had a pretty good time in the AHL, too.

Martin Frk is a seasoned pro who has played over 500 career games and won numerous championships, including an AHL Calder Cup and a Memorial Cup. He scored for the Flames in their preseason game last night, and that definitely had people talking, as many were shocked that the Flames had signed him after all of last year's controversy.
