The Calgary Flames made a big mistake when they extended Jonathan Huberdeau upon arrival, but now they may be ready to ship him and his contract out. On paper, the move to trade Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar should have been a win-win, but unfortunately, Brad Treliving shot the Flames in the foot in his final year as General Manager. He extended Huberdeau to one of the richest contracts in the NHL, and after two down years, it's safe to say that it was arguably the biggest mistake in NHL history. However, after Pierre-Luc Dubois and similarly bad contracts have been moved, there may now be interest in Huberdeau, as revealed by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. FWIW, Pagnotta mentioned there was 1 team talking to CGY about Huberdeau last week. Can't imagine what that deal would look like, lol

Not many details were revealed by Pagnotta, like how much salary the Flames were willing to retain and what team would be interested, but at 31-years of age, he should still have plenty of gas left in the tank. In 2023-24, Huberdeau was solid for Calgary, tallying 52 points in 81 games played, and if there's a team out there that believes they can revert him to his form of the Panthers days, perhaps with retention from Calgary, a move could be made after all.
