The Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks could team up to complete a trade involving Seth Jones as NHL insider Greg Wyshynski boldly predicts for the 2024 season.

With the Edmonton Oilers looking to ride the momentum of last season's Stanley Cup Finals run, GM Stan Bowman is always looking to add some more pieces especially since losing defenseman Philip Broberg and center Dylan Holloway and with Edmonton's defensive corps not necessarily the flashiest on paper, they could find themselves partnering up with a Central Division squad.

An article was published by NHL insider Greg Wyshynski called 'Bold predictions for every NHL team for the 2024-25 season' where he goes in depth with several thoughts regarding on what craziness could happen in the NHL this season including the Buffalo Sabres making the playoffs and Alex Ovechkin passes Wayne Gretzky; but his entry on Chicago may turn some heads and Edmonton is right there waiting.

Wyshynski writes:

"The NHL isn't populated with 29-year-old defensemen who can skate top-pairing minutes (25:29 per game on average for Jones last season). His contract looks less elephantine with each passing season. This could be the season where Jones gets moved if the right situation presents itself to GM Kyle Davidson, who is not the GM who traded for and signed Jones to that contract.

Funny enough, the general manager who did is now running the Edmonton Oilers, a team that has a much maligned 26-year-old defenseman making $9.25 million against the cap through 2029-30. Seth Jones-Stan Bowman reunion, when?"

Jones would immediately be in the Top 4 for Edmonton and provide some insurance and stability as they look for another deep playoff push. Seth Jones' contract was originally drafted and signed off on by current Oilers GM Stan Bowman, and if he had his way it looks like he could be reunited with his former defender. His ability to eat minutes would play huge for an Oilers defense who is solid but nothing really jumps off the page; Jones would be a big name slotted into a team with the likes of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman and others. The maligned defender Wyshynski is referring to is Darnell Nurse, who during his time in Edmonton has been good but often clouded with playoff mistakes and having abysmal stats for his team while on the ice; even Oilers legend Mark Messier didn't hold back in regards to Nurse's performance for Edmonton. Perhaps there's a world where Nurse gets a new start with the Blackhawks and Jones with Edmonton which leads both teams to success in their own ways.

The Edmonton Oilers can't afford any setbacks or a lack of defensive consistency. They aren't really young and while Jones isn't a spring chicken he's the same age as Nurse and the injury factor is a huge roadblock for the team. Jones has 150 more games played than Nurse, and while that may be a concern for some due to more miles in the tank; there's no denying that he can still put heavy minutes on his shoulders without too much effort. Averaging over 25 minutes of ice time with his time so far in Chicago, it's still two minutes more than Evan Bouchard; and two minutes can be an eternity in the NHL so having a consistent defender out there longer can only be a good thing.

The Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks could find themselves in discussions regarding Seth Jones, and whether Darnell Nurse is involved remains to be seen, but it may be the move the Oilers need in order to make the push and win the Cup this time around.
