The Columbus Blue Jackets announced a big signing today as they agreed to terms with 1011-game NHL veteran forward James Van Riemsdyk for the upcoming season.

Van Riemsdyk was a notable part of the Boston Bruins last season. While he did not play a big role for the team in terms of ice time, he was very effective in the role he was given on the 4th line. Given the roster the Blue Jackets currently have though, he will likely be expected to play in a larger role next season on his new team.

Overall, Blue Jackets fans seem to be rather excited about this news, that seemingly came out of nowhere. To be fair, many fans expected the Bruins to eventually re-sign JVR, but it appears as though Jeremy Swayman's contract negotiations ruined that possibility. Their loss is Columbus' gain.

Blue Jackets fans have every right to be excited about this signing. While the addition of JVR will do little to improve the team's chances of making the playoffs, he is a veteran leader that can help teach his young teammates how to not only survive but thrive in the NHL. Furthermore, he is still a good hockey player, and should be able to contribute to the scoresheet on a regular basis for the team.

Assuming he plays a middle-six role for the club, 40-50 points is not out of the question for the 35-year-old. The former 2nd overall pick clearly is not ready to call it a career and he is still in search of his first Stanley Cup. The Blue Jackets won't be competing in the playoffs in all likelihood next spring, but his deal makes it very easy for the team to move him at the deadline. Could he finally lift the Cup? We will just have to wait and see.
