The Edmonton Oilers put up a valiant effort in the Stanley Cup Finals, but now, their captain is under fire for a disrespectful act towards a major award.

After a thrilling seven-game series, the Florida Panthers captured their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, but it didn't come without an incredible fight from the Canadian team. It was such a fight that Connor McDavid was overwhelmingly awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP, but shockingly, he didn't come out to accept his award.
That decision drew some heat, especially from the last player to win the award in a losing effort; Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who promptly called out the Oilers captain for his actions.
It's a privilege to play in the NHL. Even if you're the best player in the world, you're not bigger than the sport. It should be an obligation to show up and accept the trophy; it's a question of respect. The handshake tradition and showing respect to the trophy are part of giving back to the game that gives us so much.

It should be an obligation to show up and accept the trophy, it's a respect question.

It is similar to the hand shake.

The game gives us so much, we should give back, and showing respect to the trophy is part of it. -J.S. Giguere

With the award, McDavid became just the sixth player in NHL history to win the award in a losing effort, and Giguere is a man of his word, as he came out through disappointment and accepted the award back in 2003.
Ultimately, it likely won't be remembered by many, but for a player like Connor McDavid who so often exemplifies what the game of hockey is all about, this was a disappointing decision by him.
