Connor McDavid has just passed former Oilers legend Mark Messier on a very special list, as the team's captain continues to shatter franchise records.

Connor McDavid closed out 2024 in style, passing Edmonton Oilers legend Mark Messier into third place on the franchise's all-time scoring list. Connor McDavid now sits at 1,036 points compared to Mark Messier's 1,034.

Only Jari Kurri, with 1,043, and the inimitable Wayne Gretzky are ahead of him now. He is seven points behind Jari Kurri and eight back to pass him, so that will come soon.

McDavid cemented his place in history when Edmonton took down the Utah Hockey Club 4-1, notching two second-period assists.

That capped an incredible year for McDavid, who became only the third player in NHL history to record 180 points in a calendar year. Only Wayne Gretzky, who did it nine times, and Mario Lemieux, who did it three times, can say that.

McDavid 2024: 42 goals, 138 assists. Just a little shy of Mario Lemieux in 1988 and his 200 points are most definitely a testament to greatness.

Of course, nobody matches Gretzky's best, some whopping 252 points back in 1983, but McDavid just won't stop writing his name beside theirs in history.

Tuesday's game also marked McDavid's 39th multi-point performance of the year, making him the second player after Gretzky to achieve this in a calendar year, something Gretzky did 11 times.

These accomplishments reinforce McDavid's place in «Mount Rushmore» conversations about hockey's all-time greats.

Other Oilers continue to climb the franchise scoring lists: Leon Draisaitl is tied with Glenn Anderson for fifth at 906 points. Darnell Nurse is eight back of Dave Hunter's 22nd spot with 282 points.

Zach Hyman is four back of Jason Arnott in 25th with 235 points, and Evan Bouchard trails Steve Smith by 19 points for sixth on the all-time defenceman list with 199.
