The Edmonton Oilers continue to announce cuts at training camp, and this time around it's a massive list that includes nine players.

The Edmonton Oilers have announced their second cut of roster players. In all, nine players were let go on Wednesday evening. This sets up the final roster that will compete in this upcoming season of the NHL. That is just days after the Oilers reassigned four junior players back to their respective OHL teams on Tuesday afternoon.

The team did not move ahead with a group of five that were off to pro tryouts: forwards Jasper Weatherby and Cameron Wright, goalie Brett Brouchu, and defensemen Connor Corcoran and Alex Kannok-Leipert. All five were assigned to report to the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers' American League affiliate, upon their release. Of the players, Weatherby is the most experienced, having played with the San Jose Sharks in the NHL during the 2021-22 season.

Of the few let go, one of the most interesting is Alex Kannok-Leipert, with a rather different background than most. A Thai-born, Saskatchewan-raised player, Kannok-Leipert, has put together one of the more interesting careers in the league. A Washington Capitals draftee, he did much of his professional time with the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL. His story reflects the varied ways in which players come to professional hockey.

The Oilers also reassigned four more players to the Bakersfield Condors. Included in those are forwards Matvey Petrov and Jayden Grubbe, both of whom got a few games in with the Condors last year. Also headed to the Condors are goaltender Connor Ungar and forward James Stefan. Last season, Petrov and Grubbe showed a good deal of promise, while Ungar is coming off a strong season at Brock University as an undrafted player into the Condors. Undrafted from the WHL, Stefan also had a great season, playing a big role in the playoffs.

As the Oilers get ready to start their season on October 9, more roster cuts are still expected within the coming days. This is just part of the process as teams nail down their rosters and head into the grueling NHL season.
