The Edmonton Oilers have made a splash in the waiver wire today, as they have claimed former first-round pick Kasperi Kapanen, from the St. Louis Blues.

The Edmonton Oilers have claimed forward Kasperi Kapanen off waivers from the St. Louis Blues. This is likely payback for the Blues having offer sheeted both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg during the summer.

Kapanen, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, has a $1 million cap hit. This year he's scored one goal in 10 games with the Blues. Last season, he scored six goals and had 22 points in 73 games.

The 28-year-old winger, who was drafted 22nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2014, has 85 goals and 209 points in 470 games for the Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Blues.

Sitting with a 9-8-2 record, the Oilers have found it tough to generate consistent offense. After an overtime defeat to the Maple Leafs on Saturday, where they also lost Darnell Nurse after a crushing hit by Ryan Reaves, and a 3-0 defeat to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, the team is looking to rebound from that tough stretch. Next, they will face the Ottawa Senators in search of more scoring depth.

«We're obviously not scoring at the rate that we usually do now,» defenceman Mattias Ekholm said after Monday's loss. «And when you don't, and things aren't going your way, that's when you've got to go back to your fundamentals and just play it simple.»

«I thought we played hard, I thought we controlled a lot of the puck,» forward Derek Ryan added. «We had some time in the offensive zone but maybe a little bit too much perimeter. We've got to find some ways to get on the interior parts of the ice. Battles in front of the net, some second and thirds, that's where you score goals when you're struggling to score."

It is not expected that Kapanen will suit up against the Senators tonight, but fans will be keeping an eye on how quickly he enters the team's lineup.
