The Edmonton Oilers lost out on two major restricted free agents this summer when Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway signed in St. Louis and now we know what went wrong. This summer the Edmonton Oilers lost both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to the St. Louis Blues after not matching their restricted free agent contracts.

In a new interview with The Athletic Oilers team President Jeff Jackson spoke about the loss of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. While discussing the loss of the two young players in free agency to the St. Louis Blues Jackson admitted that a lack of trust built between the organization and the young players was the biggest hurdle that could not be overcome. I think ultimately it comes down to the player just probably not having trust in the organization. - Jeff Jackson Jackson continued and further admitted that repeatedly sending both Holloway and Broberg to the AHL was a mistake and he also confirmed that the Oilers did not have a set plan to get either player consistent minutes in the NHL. The practical reality is when you send a player to the minors for the third or fourth time in three years, they're not in the frame of mind to sign an extension at that point We didn't have a player development department, per se back then. There wasn't a plan This is a shocking admission from the Edmonton Oilers just flat-out confirming that until recently they did not care to invest in developing their young talent.
Edmonton Oilers commit to focusing on youth development going forward
Now the Edmonton Oilers are committed to not making the same mistakes according to Jackson major overhauls have been made to player development under new General Manager Stan Bowman going forward. We really have to buckle down from this point forward and make sure that players are developing and entering the team at the right time, they know where they fit, they know what their development plan is For many years now Oilers fans have grown frustrated with the lack of talent surrounding Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. A lack of support from young players on cheap contracts has continued to hold the Oilers back from building a sustainable contending team. With the Oilers new plans to focus a lot more on development, it will be interesting to see if they can take advantage of the prime years of McDavid and Draisaitl that they have left.
