This afternoon a new report has given a major update on injuries suffered by Edmonton Oilers defensemen Mattias Ekholm and John Klingberg. Last week the Edmonton Oilers confirmed that Mattias Ekholm would miss time due to a minor injury he was still managing to recover from. Today almost an entire week later there has finally been an update on Ekholm's recovery as well as news regarding an injury suffered by John Klingberg. In an update provided by NHL analyst Louie DeBrusk, it has now been confirmed that the injuries suffered by both players are taking significantly longer to reveal themselves than originally planned.
NHL Analyst Gives A Frustrating Update On Oilers Injuries On Defense
During an interview with Oilers Nations NHL analyst for Sportsnet Louie DeBrusk spoke on the injuries to Ekholm and Klingberg. According to DeBrusk's sources, both Klingberg and Ekholm will miss the team's upcoming road trip. Despite the absence of Ekholm, DeBrusk is still hearing there is no concern for a long-term injury and that if it were the Stanley Cup Playoffs he would be in the lineup. No, they are not. They are not on the road trip. From my understanding, they want to give Ekholm from what I've heard in the conversations with Kris (Knoblauch), I think this is a decision to give him time to fully heal. This is a guy that plays heavy, hard minutes in Ekholm, and if it was playoffs, he'd be playing. Let's just say that When it comes to Klingberg the prognosis is less clear as he recently got testing done for an injury suffered while blocking a shot. For Klingberg, I'm not as clear as to what the injury is. He blocked a shot, had a scan done, and I'm not sure of the results of that or what's going on there, but he's not on the trip as well. Here is what head coach Kris Knoblauch had to say about the injuries to both players.

This means the Edmonton Oilers will be shorthanded on defense for at least the next four games as they head out East to face the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, and New York Rangers. Tonight we will get our first opportunity to see the lineup head coach Kris Knoblauch deploys without two of his top four defensemen. As more information comes out regarding a timeline for the injuries to Ekholm and Klingberg we will pass it along to you.
