The Edmonton Oilers made a huge announcement on Wednesday, and it appears that a Leon Draisaitl contract extension may be next.

Leon Draisaitl has been an absolute star for the Edmonton Oilers since his NHL arrival, and while he's being paid a significant amount right now, he's on the verge of a major upgrade. Draisaitl is set to hit free agency in the summer of 2025, but the Oilers have made no secret of wanting to extend him beforehand, and now Bob Stauffer has made a major prediction about his next contract.

«It would not surprise me if Leon were to be signed to an extension shortly»

He didn't come with any details on what he believed the contract would be, but after Auston Matthews set the market last summer with a four-year extension worth over $13 million AAV, Draisaitl's could look quite similar. With Connor McDavid's free agency set for the summer of 2026, Draisaitl's decision could effect him mightily, so signing him to an extension this summer could be a huge move for the Oilers.

Over the past three years, 110, 128 and 106 points, showing that he's capable of being the best player in the NHL beyond his MVP teammate, and if a deal gets done, the confidence of a Stanley Cup coming back to Edmonton grows further.
