Today yet another update has been given on Evander Kane's injury recovery and what it could mean for the Edmonton Oilers trade deadline plans. Within the last month, reports had indicated that it was unlikely for Evander Kane to return to the Edmonton Oilers this season. With this update came the expectation that the Oilers would be able to use Kane's salary cap number toward their needs at the trade deadline and make a big splash. However, this evening a new update from insider Frank Seravalli has revealed that things seem to have changed regarding Kane's recovery and the Oilers trade deadline plans could be thrown out the window at the last moment. According to Seravalli, there is less certainty that Kane will be out for the season which has now led the Oilers to reconsider using up that salary cap space.
Evander Kane's Looming Return Has A Major Impact On The Oilers Plans
In a new interview with Oilers Nation, insider Frank Seravalli spoke about the potential return of Kane to the team's lineup. What once was seen as a long shot for Kane to come back in the regular season is now more of a toss-up up according to the insider. The more I talk to people around the league, it is not a certainty that Evander Kane doesn't come back before the playoffs. The Oilers truly do not have an idea or an answer yet, and may not get one until a week before the deadline as to whether or not they can spend that money. With this being the case the Edmonton Oilers have a crucial decision to make heading into the trade deadline. If they believe Kane needs games in the regular season to get back to full speed and can contribute down the stretch then they will likely bring him back and forgo using their salary cap space toward other assets. However, if Kane's status for the regular season is still in doubt or even questionable we could see the Oilers take extra precautions and keep him on long-term injured reserve while making a big splash at the deadline. Seravalli continues and admits that if the Oilers do bring back Kane it basically would take them out of any conversations for a goaltending upgrade and instead a 4th line center would likely be GM Stan Bowman's top priority. If they can't spend that money, continued Seravalli. We are talking about dollar in dollar out. You can take any John Gibson or, frankly, any goaltending addition and chuck it out the window because they don't have the money to do it

As the deadline approaches all eyes will be on Bowman, Kane, and the Oilers staff to see what they end up doing and how it impacts the overall team they can build heading into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
