Today a new report from a source close to the Edmonton Oilers has revealed the reason John Klingberg has not made his Edmonton Oilers debut yet.

Just under two weeks ago now the Edmonton Oilers signed former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman John Klingberg from free agency.

After being signed by the Oilers, many fans and media members were excited to see Klingberg back on the ice after a lengthy injury recovery process to begin his season.

Despite being healthy according to all reports Klingberg had yet to debut with the Oilers consistently being out of the lineup for unknown reasons.

With now over a week of practices, the Oilers have finally spoken about what is keeping Klingberg out of the lineup and when things could likely be resolved.

Report confirms immigration issues are delaying John Klingberg's debut

This afternoon multiple reports have come in regarding Klingberg and his impending debut with the Edmonton Oilers.

According to those reports, the main roadblock between Klingberg and being in the lineup is unexpected immigration issues.

While immigration issues are not common in the NHL they do occasionally become a hindrance especially when a player signs with a new team in the middle of the season or is traded.

Now, according to head coach Kris Knoblauch, it sounds as though Klingberg's debut will have to wait until next week.

With Klingberg having an immigration appointment today that likely means he is well on his way to securing proper documentation going forward and won't be out much longer.

The process for Klingberg as of now likely pertains to him receiving a P-1 Visa to be able to sign and execute his contract with the Edmonton Oilers.

P-1 Visas

Athletes who cannot meet the «extraordinary ability standard» required for an O-1 visa may petition for a P-1 visa. To qualify for a P-1 visa the athlete must show that he is internationally recognized and is coming to the U.S. to participate in a league or event with a distinguished reputation. Athletes under contract with the NHL, NBA, MLB, MLS and NFL need only establish that they have a major league contract to qualify for a P-1 visa.

The Oilers have three games this week and three more the week after before going on break for the 4 Nations Tournament.

If Klingberg is going to miss this entire week then his most likely option to debut will either be on February 4th or 5th as the Oilers have a back-to-back road trip against the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks.

All things considered, getting Klingberg back in action for a couple of games and then getting time to rest and recover might be the best thing for him in ramping back up to full action for the Oilers down the stretch.

As this situation continues to play out we will pass along the latest details on Klingberg's debut and the impact he has on the Oilers lineup.
