The Edmonton Oilers are expected to be aggressive once again this season at the NHL Trade Deadline and today a pair of insiders laid out some early names to look out for. Earlier this month the Edmonton Oilers dipped their toes into the trade market and made a deal with the Montreal Canadiens. With the season marching on and the NHL Trade Deadline just a couple of months away reports are starting to pick up regarding who could be available for contending teams to land. Of course, when it comes to trades the Oilers will always be front and center, especially with their struggles in goal and on defense many fans and analysts see a major need to improve those positions. This afternoon a new pair of reports from Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun has connected the Oilers to a superstar goaltender and a defenseman who could help solve the team's issues.
Oilers connected to a pair of trade deadline targets by NHL insiders
In a new piece for The Athletic Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston went through a couple of players that the Edmonton Oilers could look to land before the deadline passes. The first player suggested by Johnston is Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson whose name has circulated on the trade market for several seasons as the Ducks continue to struggle as a team. The Oilers have been humming along through December with Stuart Skinner logging a majority of starts and don't have any apparent need at the position. However, they are a bottom-10 team in terms of save percentage and aren't loaded with options beyond Skinner in the event they ever have to play an extended run without him. So while Gibson may not be a priority addition, he could be a sensible one - especially in the scenario detailed above where he's being acquired with a $3.2 million cap hit. Then Pierre LeBrun suggested a different option to help the Oilers keep the puck out of the net and that is to add Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard. Enter the Oilers. There will be sexier trade targets on the market, to be sure, but I think as a sixth or seventh defenseman who can help kill penalties and who won a Cup with the Lightning - plus is a right-shot D - he's a sensible idea for Edmonton. Especially considering I don't think Savard would cost an arm and a leg. The Canadiens are reportedly looking to offload some of their veteran defensemen to create space for some of their top prospects to get NHL minutes going forward. Savard would bring size, physicality, and a veteran presence to the Edmonton Oilers blue line that would be greatly appreciated come playoff time. As the NHL Trade Deadline approaches this will be a situation to watch as the Oilers are expected to be very active in the weeks leading up to deadline day.
