An NHL writer has just linked the Edmonton Oilers to a three-time Stanley Cup champion as the team looks to ensure they have all the firepower they need. The Edmonton Oilers seem to love bringing players into their fold who have a previous connection to the organization. For example, Connor Brown signed as a free agent with the Oilers and played way back with Connor McDavid. Ty Emberson, brought in via trade in the Cody Ceci deal with the San Jose Sharks, played previously in the AHL with an affiliate that iced a team coached by current Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch. The same can be said for Stan Bowman. He claimed Alec Regula off waivers before moving to attain the services of Paul Fischer. Both players were with him with the Chicago Blackhawks. Here is a more interesting name that's been mulling a return and why the Oilers should be interested: Jonathan Toews.

<a href='https://twitter.com/ByScottPowers/status/1508612692772372489 Jonathan Toews opened up with GQ about his journey. There's a part of me that really wants to give it my all, Toews revealed. To get back on the ice and see where it takes me. There's a part of me that really doesn't feel like my career is over yet, and who knows what the next part of my journey looks like.

Stan Bowman, who helped Jonathan Toews develop into the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, is familiar with him. That can only make Edmonton happy. Even though he hasn't played since the 2022-2023 season, when he averaged 17:43 of ice time and scored 31 points in 53 games, he is still valuable. As a third or fourth-line center, Toews would provide veteran savvy, two-way reliability, and playoff experience. To that end, NHL writer Caleb Kerney of 'The Hockey News' believes adding Toews would be a way to solidify the bottom six for Edmonton, perhaps replacing Derek Ryan as the fourth-line center or even fitting in on the third line and pushing guys like Adam Henrique to the wing. Leadership, the potential for mentorship, and Stan Bowman's confidence in him could make Toews an important depth piece for the Oilers down the stretch drive. He'd get a conditioning stint to make sure he's ready to go, and this would be one of those low-risk, high-reward decisions.
