Despite the Edmonton Oilers being the first team all December to beat the Ottawa Senators in regulation, coach Kris Knoblauch was still unhappy with one player.

It needn't be fancy, only efficient. And that's just what it was as the Edmonton Oilers head into the Christmas break with a 3-1 win over the Ottawa Senators thanks to an impressive offensive night from both Viktor Arvidsson and Zach Hyman.

Jeff Skinner isn't impressing, and both he and head coach Kris Knoblauch know it. Kris Knoblauch visibly frustrated answered many subjects with the media after the game, including Jeff Skinner's move to the fourth line.

And then the head coach didn't hesitate once he was asked what Skinner needed to do to earn more ice time.

"Just play good hockey," Knoblauch revealed. He went on to talk about what Skinner's line did well against the Senators. "They spent a lot of time in the offensive zone, and they were around the net a lot. That's what I expect from him."

Though the Oilers' fourth line did have some extended periods of offensive zone pressure, Skinner was still snakebitten despite 11:50 of ice time, his most since the team's 6-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, which just so happened to be the last time he scored.

Despite some mixed messaging, Knoblauch was clear on what the expectations of the team are, and how those impact Skinner's role.

"I look at our team," Knoblauch said. "Who's he elevating? We have a lot of guys who are playing really well. He'll have his opportunity. The season is long. There's injuries, there's slumps."

The NHL grind is long over 82 games, but a winger capable of scoring between 30 to 40 goals does not belong in the bottom six.

For now, though, it's a cycle. And Knoblauch is steadfast: this revolving door won't stop until Skinner proves to be the top-six player he was brought in to be.
