Get ready Oilers fans, your captain Connor McDavid is returning for tonight's game against the Golden Knights, way ahead of schedule.

In a surprise to many, the Edmonton Oilers' superstar Connor McDavid returns to play against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday, a mere nine days after his ankle injury. The Oilers confirmed McDavid's quick return, which many people did not expect. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported the announcement many Oilers fans had been waiting for.

It was only 37 seconds into his first shift against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 28 that McDavid got injured. The incident looked serious at the time, as in an awkward fall into the boards on his left leg, trying to skate past Columbus defenseman Ivan Provorov.

The Oilers had initially estimated McDavid to miss up to two or three weeks, meaning his earliest possible return would have fallen on next Tuesday against the New York Islanders. But McDavid is returning a remarkable five days ahead of that pace, having missed a total of just two games in the process. This is obviously a testament to McDavid's hard work and resiliency.

There was not much surprise to the timing of McDavid's return, given he was already back to practice earlier in the week, but many anticipated his return to come at least a game later than tonight. He talked about being "day-to-day" on Monday and mentioned he wanted to be prepared for the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. Instead, he'll be competing against the Golden Knights, an important divisional opponent.

Before the injury, Connor McDavid was off to a bit of a slow start, with 10 points in 10 games. He missed three games, and with that short of absence, his overall season totals should not take a hit. Last season he missed six games and still tied for the league lead in assists with 100, showing that McDavid is very capable of bouncing back after any time missed.
