Edmonton Oilers fans should familiarize themselves with defenseman Tony DeAngelo. Could he be the right shot defenseman they need?

It's possible GM Stan Bowman gives him the opportunity as the veteran could come at a bargain, which is precisely what the cap-strapped and Cup-contending Oilers are looking for.

Earlier in the offseason, there were rumors swirling that his NHL career might be over because nobody seemed interested in picking him up.

However, there's now talk that he might have a shot in Edmonton.

The 28 year-old posted 11 points in 31 games with an average ice time of just 14:20 per game. Yet of his points, six were on the power play, which is problematic.

Evan Bouchard is locked in on that top man-advantage unit, meaning DeaAngelo would replace Mattias Ekholm or Darnell Nurse on PP2. Unfortunately, the second unit gets the downsized half of power plays. Still, it doesn't hurt to have depth, making him an enticing option.

Sure, his stock might be a bit down after a rough year with the Carolina Hurricanes, yet don't forget his breakout season with the New York Rangers in 2019-2020 when he had 53 points in 68 games, and proved he could walk the blue line effectively.

With training camp right around the corner, maybe it's time to give DeAngelo a shot, whether it's a short-term deal or a PTO. Could he help them get back to dancing to "La Bamba" next spring? Only time will tell.
