As the Edmonton Oilers lace up for what could be a Stanley Cup-winning season, every transaction must have a purpose. The top six is set but what about the bottom six? The Oilers will likely need to promote someone from their AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors to serve as part of the meat grinders. Consider Lane Pederson-a 27-year-old right-shot center who's been a a journeyman since he was with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016. He's played 71 NHL games in his career and is owed $775K by Edmonton, on the back half of the two year pact he signed last Summer. Pederson had 22 goals and 52 points in 66 games, while also showing flashes defensively, making him a gritty two way center.

Now he could finally hear his name called as the organization said goodbye to Ryan McLeod, Warren Foegele, and Dylan Holloway. Derek Ryan, a reliable 4th liner and penalty killer, is 37 now and might not be as effective. If he starts to slow down in training camp, Pederson could be a great option to step in.

After trading defenseman Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks, and forward Ryan McLeod to the Buffalo Sabres and not matching the offer sheets from the Blues for Dylan Holloway and Phillip Broberg, to manage their salary cap, GM Stan Bowman now has more flexibility. It opens the door for prospects like Matthew Savoie, Raphael Lavoie, and James Hamblin to get crack the lineup.

With potentially the deepest roster of the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisatil era, this season is shaping up to be one for the ages.
