The future looks bleak for the Edmonton Oilers, as an NHL analyst from The Athletic has revealed the team has players with tumbling stocks. Bad news for the Edmonton Oilers prospect system, according to The Athletic's Scott Wheeler. Wheeler just released his Top 100 prospects list. The inclusion qualifier is that the player is a skater, younger than age 23, and is not yet established in the NHL. By that yardstick, a number of Oilers prospects fit that description, such as Matthew Savoie (part of the Ryan McLeod trade), 2024 first-rounder Sam Reilly, 2023 second-rounder Beau Akey, plus Maximus Wanner, Matvey Petrov, Jayden Grubbe, and Shane LaChance. But just one of those players, Savoie, was included on Wheeler's list. As great a season as he's having in the AHL, his stock took a hit, dropping nine spots in overall rankings, from nine in 2022 to 46 in Wheeler's Top 100.

The rest of his 2022 first-rounders suffered a hit too: Simon Nemec (2nd to 12th), David Jiricek (6th to 20th), Kevin Korchinski (7th to 28th), Marco Kasper (8th to 31st), Connor Geekie (11th to 53rd), Frank Nazar (13th to 27th), Rutger McGroarty (14th to 44th), and Jonathan Lekkerimaki (15th to 32nd).
The time to win in Edmonton is now
Edmonton's system is thin, to be fair. The team has traded draft capital in a quest to win a Stanley Cup in a period when Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are in their prime. The time to win is now in Edmonton, and fans sure hope the current core is able to bring a Stanley Cup to the city, as no one knows what the future quite holds.
