The Edmonton Oilers may have lost 1-0 to Vegas last night, but in the process, they did something that hasn't been seen in the NHL for over 80 years. It was one of those games where the Oilers likely deserved a better fate through much of it since they dominated Vegas much of the game. Dominating the third period in shots 16-2, the Edmonton Oilers couldn't solve goalie Adin Hill of the Vegas Golden Knights. Miraculously, neither team was called for a penalty in the game. It was the first NHL game in 80 years to have one goal scored without a penalty being assessed and the first such game since the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Chicago Blackhawks in 1944.

Edmonton had been playing a tight-checking game against its divisional foe, with few chances either way and only 26 shots combined entering the final period. While the historical note is pretty cool, the Oilers feel they did enough to win the game despite the 1-0 loss.

Of the post-game comments from Edmonton players, defenseman Mattias Ekholm merely hinted the game wasn't quite as clean as the record would indicate without dwelling on the officiating. «You'll have to ask the referees about that, I don't know,» Ekholm said with a grin. «It was a well-checked game I thought. A couple things that could have been called, but I thought they kept it pretty even.» It was a tough result to swallow, particularly considering the 1-0 contest saw goaltender Stuart Skinner post a mark of .933 in save percentage. An offense this talented is seldom this frustrated, even in a 1-0 loss. «Could have went either way,» Draisaitl said after the game. «I thought we had enough looks in the third to tie it up but, obviously, their goalie was on.» The Oilers try to get their offense back on track as they take to the ice at Rogers Place Thursday night against Sean Monahan and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
