The Edmonton Oilers have struggled with goaltending all season long as they have had to rely on Stuart Skinner heavily but now an opportunity has arisen to provide a solution. This season the Edmonton Oilers were expected to be one of the best teams in the NHL led by their offensive skill and supported by a solid defensive unit and above-average goaltending. Instead, they have barely stayed relevant in the Stanley Cup Playoff race and have almost entirely put the brunt of the responsibility on their offense to carry the load. For months now the Oilers have been linked to different defensemen and goaltenders as they look to fill in the gaps and take some of the pressure of offensive stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. To this point, all of the solutions have been more expensive than the Oilers are willing to pay but that could be changing thanks to a surprising waiver announcement today.
Oilers could take advantage of surprising waiver move to find Stuart Skinner's backup
The Oilers have been happy with Stuart Skinner's play this season, but too much has been placed on his shoulders, and now they have an opportunity to change that. Earlier today the Montreal Canadiens made the surprising announcement that goaltender Cayden Primeau was placed on waivers to be assigned to the AHL.

With Primeau on waivers, the Oilers now have a big decision to make as he is a player potentially worth putting in a claim for. This season Primeau has struggled mightily on a bad Canadiens team but last season he was one of the better backup goaltenders in the NHL with a 2.99 goals against average and a 0.910 save percentage. According to top public scout Hadi Kalakeche Primeau faced a lot more defensive breakdowns and chaos in front of him this season due to Montreal's lack of structure which has led to his regression in 2024-25.

These numbers place him in the territory of a good backup and at just 25 years old there is still plenty of room for growth and rapid improvement in the right environment. Currently, the Oilers' backup goalie is Calvin Pickard who has similar numbers to that of Primeau but is 7 years older. If the Oilers want to find a long-term partner for Skinner to be in tandem with making a move like this and claiming Primeau makes a lot of sense. Of course, the Oilers will still need other teams around the NHL to pass on him to land Primeau but it is worth taking the shot to potentially lock down your goalie tandem of the future.
