Goaltender Jacob Fowler in the Montreal Canadiens organization punched an opposing player who scored on him and got ejected: he may now be suspended. Against the UConn Huskies, Boston College netminder Jacob Fowler had a night to forget. With an impressive starting record to the year with stats reading 7-1-0 in eight starts, coupled with an excellent 1.26 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage, performance and poise dramatically came unraveled. The turning point came early in the second period. Trailing 2-1 already, Huskies forward Tristan Fraser capitalized on a 2-on-1 opportunity to push UConn's lead to two goals. As he crashed hard into the crease after the puck crossed the line, chaos erupted. While the goal was ruled good, Fowler took umbrage with Fraser's overly aggressive approach and responded in a fit of rage. Storming out of his net, Fowler went after Fraser and connected with a punch using his blocker.

To put that in context, blockers are solid, heavy pieces of equipment, and using it as Fowler did constitutes a weapon. The hit touched off an on-ice firestorm, and referees immediately tossed Fowler from the game. His season might now be in jeopardy of suspension, due to NCAA rules that call for more severe punishment than the NHL would dole out for the same infraction. The early end to Fowler's night left Boston College on shaky ice. The third-round pick of the Canadiens has been very promising, but this incident also brought out the disciplinary aspect of his development that needs to be taken care of. Going forward, Fowler remains a very promising prospect for Montreal. The outburst will no doubt bring scrutiny, but his general talent and performance to this point indicate he can succeed at higher levels of the organization. The Habs and their fans should pay lots of attention to him going forward as he works on refining both his skills and temperament.
