The Montreal Canadiens are in danger of losing not only one but two stars due to injury, and the first update on them isn't a promising one.

The 2024/25 pre-season in the NHL has been full of brutal injuries, but no one has felt it more than the Montreal Canadiens, who are fearful that not one but two key players may miss significant time after sustaining scary injuries. Now, in the first update on both David Reinbacher and Patrik Laine, none of those worries have been alleviated, as the two left the arena on crutches after their pre-season tilt with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Official updates from the team are expected to come in the next few hours as further examinations of both players continue, but according to Dr. Harjas Grewal, the signs aren't promising for either, but Laine especially, who he believes will be week-to-week in the very best case scenario.

Given how reliant the Canadiens will be on their young core, the injury of a veteran leader like Laine is the last thing this team needs, and if an injury interrupted the development of a former first-round draft pick, it would be the worst way possible for this team to begin their season. Until an official update comes from the Canadiens, all that can be done is speculation, but given how brutal both looked leaving the ice and the use of crutches and braces after the game, it's safe to say that we could be looking at some long-term absences.
