Within one hour of Brett Pesce's final game with the Carolina Hurricanes, his dad sent out a tweet and said his goodbyes to the team, which sparked speculation.

Defenseman Brett Pesce has played his entire NHL career with the Carolina Hurricanes, and on July 1st he became an unrestricted free agent (UFA). Just a few hours into free agency, Pesce signed a six-year, $33 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.

His dad likely knew everything that was about to happen even before Pesce suited up for his final game with the Canes, as he had tweeted out that he was going to miss the city and team, as he basically ruined the biggest off-season surprise. It is against NHL rules to be involved in tampering, such as other teams reaching out and getting you to informally agree to a contract with them, however it is possible Pesce hadn't chosen the Devils at that moment, but just simply knew he would not be returning to Carolina.

Brett couldn't believe when he heard that his dad had tweeted out a goodbye right during that final moment he had playing with the Hurricanes in the last game. He almost didn't think it was real, so his wife had to show him the tweet as Brett says he barely ever uses social media. Pesce reached out to his dad and questioned him as to why he did that, and it led to a very big argument where Pesce claims he didn't speak to his dad for an entire week.

Pesce grew up in Terrytown, New York, which is about one hour away from Newark where the Devils play, so it has all worked out for him in the end as he gets to return to his home area.

Let this be a lesson learned for Pesce and other athletes to keep their cards close to their chest as you never want to reveal too much especially before anything is signed on a dotted line. Pesce's dad was probably excited at the thought that his son could get closer to home and possibly used it as a tactic to lure him out of Carolina and closer to the state of New York. Seems to have worked!

Brett Pesce has played all 627 career NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes and has scored a total of 39 goals and 198 points.
