Former Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft remains without a job in the NHL, raising question marks from many across the league.

Woodcroft had a rough go of it last season, as the Oilers stumbled out of the gates, despite their elite roster including players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. As the team made the Stanley Cup finals, it is obvious that they were always good enough to win those games, but for whatever reason Woodcroft just couldn't seem to find any wins. The season low point for the team probably came when they lost to the league-worst Sharks, who ended up staying in 32nd place all season long, leading to them winning the draft lottery.

Woodcroft was seemingly very popular with Oilers fans prior to this season. Even then, many fans seemed to still believe in him even as the team imploded early in the season. The team was coming off a season in which they finished 2nd in the Pacific division with 109 points and 50 wins. As such, this implosion was totally unexpected. Furthermore, he clearly knows how to coach teams effectively in the NHL, so why is he still without a job?

Even Connor McDavid himself said that Woodcroft never 'lost the room.' He defended the coach right up until his final moments with the team, showing how popular he was among Oilers players.

Interestingly, Woodcroft revealed during an interview in the playoffs that he had not been watching the team after they let him go. Instead, he's been studying the rest of the league, preparing for his next job be that as a head coach or an assistant.

Woodcroft is not the most experienced coach in the NHL, with just 133 career games as a head coach, all with the Edmonton Oilers. He has a record of 79-41-13 and has finished 2nd in the Pacific Division three times, including last season where he coached just 13 games. The 2022-23 season remains his only full 82-game season as a coach.
