Serbian athlete Lazar Dukic has passed away after drowning during the 2024 CrossFit games and fans are absolutely furious with the organization. The CrossFit Games acknowledged Dukic's death, releasing a statement on X after the incident occurred. While they shared their condolences for Dukic and his family, the response was simply inadequate for the situation. Unfortunately though, it is not their response that will garner the heaviest criticism. After all, there should have been preventative measures in place to make sure that this exact thing does not happen.

On fan of the games who also happens to be a lifeguard, called out the organization for a lack of safety personnel. She revealed that the standard safety requirements are one lifeguard per five athletes. The games had just three on duty for more than 70 competitors.

Many fans pointed fingers at the lifeguards that were standing on paddleboards in very close proximity to where the drowning took place. Neither appeared to notice that anything was wrong, despite the fact that it was their sole responsibility to ensure the safety of the athletes.

One fan made an extremely damning point in the replies to the CrossFit Games post. He noted that everyone watching on the livestream saw a man literally die right in front of them while the organization and their staff did nothing to prevent it or even help him after the fact.

In fact, it is not clear how long Dukic was under water before the dive team even went in to find him. At that point, it was clearly to late, but in drowning cases, it is often a matter of seconds that can be the difference between life and death. In this case, it seems as though there was no reaction from safety personnel for at least several minutes. Hopefully a proper investigation will determine all the facts in this case, which will show just how reckless and careless the CrossFit Games really were.
