Matt Rempe of the Rangers was once again the center of attention last night as he was ejected for an awful hit against the Stars and now faces a likely suspension.

New York Rangers right winger Matt Rempe was assessed a game misconduct for elbowing Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen during an emotionally charged game.

The incident occurred with about seven minutes remaining in the third and the Rangers leading 2-1.

Miro Heiskanen was attempting to clear the puck from the Dallas defensive zone when Matt Rempe came from behind and hit him with a high elbow. Heiskanen stayed down for a moment before skating to the bench and played for four more shifts.

After the hit, Stars center Roope Hintz took umbrage and got into some extracurricular activity with Rempe in defense of his teammate.

The two players received matching roughing minors, but Rempe also was assessed a five-minute major for elbowing, plus a 10-minute game misconduct that ended his night after just 5:32 of ice time and five hits.

But despite Rempe's early exit, the Rangers killed off the major penalty and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Stars. This marks Rempe's fourth ejection in only 22 games in the NHL.

"I thought he had a big impact on the game," Rangers coach Peter Laviolette told reporters afterward. "I'd like to stay away from the five-minute major, but he's doing his best to hit bodies and make a difference in the game. Our guys really rallied around that at the end."

The others have included a major penalty with a four-game suspension for elbowing Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler on March 11, a match penalty stemming from a hit on Nathan Bastian on Feb. 22, and another game misconduct when he was involved during the Rangers-Devils line brawl on Apr. 3.

Recalled from the AHL, where he has three goals and five points in 18 games, including 22 penalty minutes with the Hartford Wolf Pack, Rempe made his first appearance since November 25th against the St. Louis Blues.

The 22-year-old has appeared in five games for the NHL club this year, collecting one shot and 24 penalty minutes.

In 17 games last year, he picked up 71 penalty minutes with a goal and an assist. Rempe is averaging 6:15 of ice time this year and 5:46 for his career.
