There have been some increasingly shocking names placed on waivers this past week, and now, former first-round pick Samuel Poulin is surprisingly among them. Waivers have been very interesting in the NHL in the weeks leading up to the regular season, and now we've potentially had the biggest shocker of all. On Friday, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that former 2019 first-round draft pick Samuel Poulin has officially been waived, and while we've seen very few claims in recent times, there's no doubting that Poulin would be an interesting pickup for opposing teams.

At 23-years of age, the Quebec native hasn't quite developed the way those in the Penguins organization would have hoped, with just six NHL games played since his arrival in the organization. However, he has had two very solid AHL seasons with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, tallying 37 and 31 points in his two campaigns, and with good size at 6-foot-1, 208 pounds, he still certainly has a future in the league. Unsurprisingly, given where he's from, it didn't take long for Canadiens fans to take notice, as they are already looking at their team to pick up the young winger on waivers.

They likely won't be the only team interested in Poulin, who headlines a group that also includes former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ethan Bear. With the regular season beginning for Buffalo and New Jersey and the rest of the league in less than a week, excitement is building and so are rosters, but with many intriguing names in the Friday waiver group, expect there to be plenty of interest in several names from this impressive group. 15 of the players placed on waivers came from Pittsburgh, New Jersey and Boston, no doubt part of a strategy to reduce the interest in their players, but with so many talented young names featured on the list, the next few days will definitely be intriguing as teams finalize their rosters for a highly anticipated 2024/25 season.
