Once an all-star, goaltender Tristan Jarry was placed on waivers by the Penguins yesterday, and with the deadline having passed, we now know his new team.

The Tristan Jarry era in Pittsburgh hit a crossroads yesterday when it was announced that the team had shockingly placed him on waivers.

Tristan Jarry clears waivers and will report to his new team

The 29-year-old goaltender cleared waivers and is eligible to join the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins as his new team, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.

In his place, the Penguins called up rookie Joel Blomqvist to back up Alex Nedeljkovic, who took over the starting job from Jarry.

"At this point, just feel it's best in the long run for the team and for Tristan to allow Joel to come up here," Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas said on Wednesday. "We think over the past year-and-half with his play in Wilkes-Barre and when he's been up here with us, he's earned the right to have a go at it."

Jarry signed a five-year, $26.8 million extension with Pittsburgh on July 1, 2023, leaving three years remaining on his deal with a $5.38 million cap hit per PuckPedia.

After relinquishing the starting job to Nedeljkovic last spring, Jarry won the top job out of training camp this year but struggled mightily out of the gate and was demoted to the AHL for conditioning.

His early-game performances have been a problem, allowing goals on the first shot six times this year. He also allowed a short-handed goal on Seattle's second shot in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Kraken.

During his five AHL appearances this year, Jarry has recorded a.926 save percentage and a 2.12 goals-against average.

"Throughout this whole stretch, he's continued to come in here and put the work in. That's not been a question at all. It just hasn't materialized the way we would like it to on the ice," Dubas said. "At this level, you get to the point where you have to do what's right in the long run for him and for us."

The Penguins, who sit seventh in the Metropolitan Division at 18-20-8, have lost three in a row. They play Thursday at the Buffalo Sabres.
