Sidney Crosby is on pace to pass one of the all-time record held by Wayne Gretzky, even before Alex Ovechkin has the chance to pass him for most goals.

The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 on Saturday night, as Sidney Crosby scored two to beat the visitors. Crosby's first goal was late in the first period and broke a scoreless tie. He struck again with under two minutes remaining in the second period, this time on a power play, extending the lead of Pittsburgh. This was a game in which Crosby further solidified his place in the history books. Moving up on the NHL's all-time list, he tied for 14th in game-winning goals with legends Joe Nieuwendyk and Sergei Fedorov and eclipsed Luc Robitaille for the 13th-most even-strength goals in history.

During a highlight-reel play, Kris Letang beautifully controlled the puck at the blue line, dodging Montreal's Nick Suzuki before making a perfect backhand pass to Crosby. With a quick wrist shot, Crosby beat goaltender Samuel Montembeault on the glove side. The goal moved Crosby and Letang past Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty for the third-most goals by a forward-defenseman duo in NHL history.

After a relatively slow start to the season by his standards, Crosby has seen his offensive presence take off. In 13 games he's tallied 14 points, with five goals, and nine assists, while scoring four goals and seven points in his last three. Crosby's back-to-back multi-goal games, after netting two against Anaheim on Thursday, are the seventh time in his career that he has achieved that feat in consecutive games. Let there be no doubt now: the Penguins captain is again at the peak of his powers, infusing much-needed lightning into the team's offense.

Sidney Crosby is now on the verge of reaching yet another significant milestone, which has only been reached by Wayne Gretzky in NHL history. Crosby is just three goals shy of 600. Once he hits that mark, he would be just the second player ever with at least 600 goals, 1600 points, three Stanley Cups, and two Stanley Cup playoff MVPs. However, the all-time record here would belong to Crosby over Gretzky because he would be the first to do it with consecutive playoff MVPs, something that shockingly Gretzky was never able to accomplish in his illustrate career. This would in fact give Crosby an all-time record before Alex Ovechkin surpasses Gretzky for the all-time goals record.

That's huge momentum for Sidney Crosby as the Penguins now prepare for an extremely tough three-game road trip against the Capitals, Hurricanes, and Islanders. With his recent milestones and continued strong play, Crosby is still very much the life of the Penguins' push toward a successful season and will be ready to lead the charge against some of the toughest opponents this week. We could witness history this week as Crosby attempts to overtake Wayne Gretzky's record, something we will possibly have to wait until next season to see Alex Ovechkin do.
