Alex Steeves was recently cut by the Leafs in training camp and sent them a massive message with the Marlies by playing the game of his life shortly after. Alex Steeves, a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, made an emphatic return to the Toronto Marlies with an outstanding first game back, recording a hat-trick and promptly reminding everyone what the NHL club might be missing after his recent reassignment to the AHL team. The official account on X of the Marlies showed just how skilled and determined Steeves was in the process.

Indeed, many expected the 24-year-old forward, which the leafs cut in the final week of training camp, would push for a full-time NHL role this season. Most people thought when he signed a two-way contract worth $775,000 annually, Steeves had the potential to crack the crowded Maple Leafs roster. His chance was sacrificed on the altar of enormous team depth at forwards. Having played only seven games across the past three seasons, Steeves has consistently shown his worth within the AHL. His production with the Marlies has been trending upward offensively, as his point total has improved each season. Steeves went from 46 to 51, to 57 points in consecutive seasons and was one of the consistent contributors on the team. With Steeves having contract flexibility and the ability to perform under pressure, he will likely find his name at the top of the list when injuries occur within the Leafs. His past success in the AHL, along with trust developed with the organization, makes him a very good candidate when a call-up is needed. Another strong season with the Marlies could put Alex Steeves in a great position to join the NHL roster once again. That development and such a performance might just open more doors at the top level soon enough.
