It is sounding like the Mitch Marner saga in Toronto will continue at least for a little while longer as Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the forward intends to start next season with the Leafs. The insider revealed this information on his podcast 32 thoughts earlier this week. Furthermore, he also talked about the situation from the Leafs perspective. According to Friedman, the Leafs are well aware of how high the stakes are in this situation. If they trade Marner and don't get an adequate return, Leafs fans could lose faith in the team, which may hurt their bottom line as well as the on-ice product. Similarly, if this situation goes all the way to next summer and they let Marner walk in free agency without getting anything in return, that would be a massive blow to the team. One of the things a few people have told me is not be surprised if this plays out over next season with Marner and Toronto. The Leafs are determined to either make a good trade or, with the cap room that is created by that trade, do something big. They know they can't afford to have a swing and a miss with this one.

As such, it makes sense why Brad Treliving has shown some reservations about trading Marner. He has repeatedly noted that he will not trade the winger just for the sake of changing the team. That being said, the team may need to be changed in order to find playoff success. When asked about Mitch Marner, Brad Treliving said the Leafs won't trade him just for the sake of it

Marner and the Leafs do at least appear to be on the same page though. Pierre LeBrun recently revealed that Marner has no plans to discuss his future with the Leafs in the short-term, so it seems almost certain that he will start the season in Toronto. The Mitch Marner camp currently has no plans to discuss an extension or a trade list. Their preference is to honor the last year of the contract and see where things go.

Since Marner holds a no-trade clause, he really does hold all the power in negotiations though. One possibility is that he uses that no-trade to stay with the team the entire regular season, even without an extension in place. Then he could walk next summer, effectively ruining the Leafs' plans. Be sure to stay tuned to see how it all pans out.
