The Toronto Maple Leafs signed 6 foot 6 free agent defenseman Philippe Myers on July 1st, which can turn into one of the biggest steals ever.

Myers is a staggering 6 foot 6 when he's off skates, so likely closer to 7 feet tall on skates. His signing was perceived by many to be GM Brad Treliving simply filling in some of the lower roster spots in a depth move, however Myers may bring a lot more than what meets the eye.

Asked BriseBois specifically about Philippe Myers and how he's looked in Syracuse.

Not only is Myers tall, but his weight comes in at nearly 215 pounds. He is extremely physical and can always be counted on by his coach to kill penalties. He has a great +/-, which proves he is very responsible defensively. For these reasons, combined with how cheap the Leafs signed him for, the league minimum $775,000, this could turn out to be the steal of free agency.

The Leafs have signed Dakota Mermis, Philippe Myers and Cedric Pare to one-year contracts.

Myers seems to be the whole package. He's got the right size, great skill, lots of experience and now an opportunity to make a huge impact for the Leafs this upcoming season. Thanks to his ridiculously low salary cap hit, this is a real diamond in the rough acquisition.
