Today a new report from a Maple Leafs source has started the conversation surrounding a potential trade for the team before opening night. With the NHL preseason finally wrapped up today was the day for teams to clean up their roster by sending players down or putting them on waivers. The Maple Leafs were one of the more inactive teams only placing Matt Murray and Marshall Rifai on waivers. Despite making these moves the Toronto Maple Leafs still remain over both the roster limit as well as the salary cap. This is likely due to the fact that any player the Maple Leafs are considering sending down would be claimed on waivers. The emergence of some younger players has forced the Maple Leafs to make decisions they haven't had to worry about for several seasons. With this in mind, the Maple Leafs could be looking at a different solution.
Reports indicate the Maple Leafs could be looking to make a trade
After these moves were made discussion began on the Maple Leafs plans. According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, a trade could be on the horizon to send out roster players who would be heading to waivers.

One of the major contributors that has led to this situation is the breakout of Nick Robertson. Many assumed he would be assigned to the AHL but now Robertson has earned an NHL roster spot after leading the team in preseason scoring. This will now likely lead a veteran to be moved out via trade or by being placed on waivers. A few candidates who could be in consideration to be traded are Pontus Holmberg, David Kampf, and Calle Jarnkrok. All three players are in the bottom-six forwards for the Toronto Maple Leafs according to Daily Faceoff. Their production if traded will be easier to replace than the potential ceiling of talent that Nick Robertson brings to the lineup. With just a couple of days until the season begins the Maple Leafs need to figure out what their plan is. As more information becomes available we will pass it along to you.
