Mitch Marner isn't making many friends in Leafs Nation right now following his post-game remarks after last night's disastrous loss against the Vancouver Canucks.

The boos cascaded around Scotiabank Arena, a sound the Maple Leafs aren't used to hearing. But last night night, Toronto fans had their say, and it wasn't pretty.

The Leafs had been shut out by the Vancouver Canucks in a franchise-first win for the visitors. Their hostility was very much in the air as the jeers sliced through the arena.

But the real drama came well after the final whistle, in the locker room with the doors closed. Chris Tanev and Craig Berube were candid post-game. The effort wasn't there. The team fell flat. Changes were in order.

But on what was a night of accountability, one voice stood out, for all the wrong reasons. Assistant captain Mitch Marner wasn't ready to take any blame for a performance that was more nightmare than dream.

He liked how the team went about it, suggesting the Canucks capitalized on their chances. His words sent shockwaves through Leafs Nation. Accountability? Nowhere to be seen. Leadership? Up for debate.

"I liked it. I thought we played well, I really did. The last couple of games, we've been giving up plays to teams that aren't missing on them."

- Mitch Marner

Fans want Mitch Marner's "A" stripped

Social media blew up. Fans on X were calling for Marner to lose his «A» because he proved once more he wasn't willing to take any blame for his team's failure.

That he's having a big season, sitting with 59 points in 44 games, tied for fourth in the NHL point leaders, didn't matter. The «A» isn't given out for statistics; it's given out for standing up when it counts.

The pressure is now on. On Tuesday, the Leafs will play host to the Dallas Stars. It will be on every fan's mind: can Marner step up to the plate, or will his words get in the way once again on the ice?
