Jani Hakanpaa has made his return to the ice in a Leafs uniform and could be ready in time for Tuesday's Battle of Ontario, while another player suffered a setback.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa, who has yet to appear in a regular season NHL game this year, took to the ice ahead of Monday's practice session as the latest step on his road to recovery to return to the lineup.

Over the weekend, Hakanpaa returned to competitive play, suiting up for a pair of games with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL on a conditioning loan as he works his way back from a knee injury.

It was his first two games since March, an important marker in determining his progress.

A towering 6-foot-7, 225-pound defenseman out of Finland, Hakanpaa brings a wealth of experience to the Leafs on a one-year deal inked September 11.

The 32-year-old veteran has appeared in 288 NHL contests while notching 15 goals and 45 points for the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Dallas Stars.

Hakanpaa is eligible to return Tuesday against the Senators in the first installment of the Battle of Ontario, but it remains to be seen whether head coach Craig Berube will insert him into the lineup.

Meanwhile, Leafs GM Brad Treliving did have an update on forward Calle Jarnkrok as well.

Jarnkrok, who's had a couple of minor setbacks in his return from a lower-body injury, will head to see a specialist in New York.

Over the weekend, head coach Craig Berube said that Jarnkrok doesn't have a timeline after missing the first 16 games this season.

The 33-year-old forward had a pretty good year with the Leafs last season, notching 10 goals and 11 assists in 52 games.

He did struggle to find the score sheet in the playoffs, failing to record a point in seven postseason games.

In the third year of a four-year, $8.4 million contract that carries an annual average value of $2.1 million, Jarnkrok's return will go under the microscope as the Leafs seek to tighten up their lineup.
