Tonight a new report from Elliotte Friedman has finally revealed what led the Toronto Maple Leafs to put Joseph Woll on injured reserve just before the season. The Toronto Maple Leafs had high hopes coming into this season of reaching heights they have not in recent years. With sights set on a deep playoff run, the Toronto Maple Leafs once again entrusted Joseph Woll to be the starting goalie. Unfortunately, those plans were ruined almost immediately. Hours before the Toronto Maple Leafs were supposed to debut against the Montreal Canadiens reports came out that Woll was not healthy. Then shortly after the Toronto Maple Leafs announced they had placed Joseph Woll on injured reserve. After placing Joseph Woll on injured reserve not much has been known about his injury. Speculation began to build that it was a recent injury as Joseph Woll had been practicing and told the media he was excited to play. However, the team had never confirmed exactly what happened. Now after a few days have passed NHL insider Elliotte Friedman was able to do some research and find out several key details about the situation.
Elliotte Friedman confirms several key details about Joseph Woll's injury
Elliotte Friedman once again spoke about the Toronto Maple Leafs on his 32 Thoughts Podcast as he often does. Today Joseph Woll was the subject of conversation. Elliotte Friedman revealed that Joseph Woll had been dealing with an injury through much of training camp that the Maple Leafs want to be careful with. He also revealed that he is not sure what the opinion of Joseph Woll is within the organization after this latest injury. Some of the talk in Toronto was How are these guys going to trust them? They're going to lose faith, how can they believe in them?' Friedman said. When things like that get said, what I wonder about is, is it opinion or is someone telling people this? Opinions are fine, everybody's entitled to them. But I think there's a difference between that's what people are saying and that's what is being told them. Right now I can't tell, to be perfectly honest, if there's any team-wide disappointment at it, but they were definitely hoping that it wouldn't be the case right now and they have no choice but to bubble wrap him. With no choice but to try and keep Joseph Woll healthy Elliotte Friedman thinks the Maple Leafs will make some major changes with Joseph Woll going forward. The biggest seems to be likely extra mandated rest days for the Maple Leafs starter. In this day and age, I think you're seeing a lot of more teams starting to say that You can't do this anymore, that there has to be more rest,'» he said. «For Woll, I think they're going to say No more practicing as much as you do.' Each team gets four days off a month, which is CBA-mandated, but I wonder if you're gonna see it even more. I do believe that that's one of the things they're discussing. Injuries unfortunately have become part of the story for Joseph Woll. Last season during the Stanley Cup Playoffs Woll suffered a back injury against the Boston Bruins. If the Toronto Maple Leafs still believe Joseph Woll is the answer in goal then this is a plan that needs to be executed. The Toronto Maple Leafs will need to manage Joseph Woll and protect him from himself if they want to see his continued success in Toronto. After being placed on injured reserve Joseph Woll will be out for at least 7 days. It will be interesting to see if he remains out longer than that or if he returns as soon as the CBA allows. While he is out the Toronto Maple Leafs have turned to veteran Anthony Stolarz to fill the starting role. In his first game he performed well but ultimately did lose. As more news comes in regarding Joseph Woll and his return to the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup we will bring it to you.
